Julia Sarisetiati, born in 1981 in Jakarta, graduated from the Faculty of Art and Design at Trisakti University, majoring in Photography. She is a member of ruangrupa, an artist initiative based in Jakarta that currently oversees Gudskul Collective Studies and Contemporary Art Ecosystem, an informal educational platform for art practitioners in collaboration with two other artist collectives. Previously, Sari led the "Collective Sustainability Strategy" at Gudskul, one of the 11 existing topics.

In 2013, she managed RURU Corps, a visual communication bureau that also aimed to find a model of economic sustainability for artist-initiated spaces. This effort was recognized with the Diageo-British Council Social Enterprise Challenge for Arts, Creative, and Tourism Organization award in 2015. In 2017, she co-curated the media art festival OK. Video with Renan Laru-an, showcasing works centered on the theme of “pangan” (food). These works evolved into laboratory-based research projects exploring and demonstrating economic and social sustainability.

In 2020, her proposal "Pulang Pergi" (a platform for sharing experiences and knowledge between active and former migrant workers) received an honorary mention from Prix Ars Electronica. Since 2021, she has been part of the lumbung.space working group, which aims to envision what a digital platform for inter-local collective practice that is self-organized and non-extractive might look like.

In November 2022, Gudsis was formed, comprising Gertrude Flentge, Frederikke Hansen, and Julia Sarisetiati from the documenta fifteen Artistic Team collaboration, which provides an intimate space for continued collaborative efforts, particularly in developing the lumbung concept (the practice of building a resilient commons-based economy). In 2023, Julia’s works were acquired by the Kadist Collection.
