People’s migration in global scale caused by economical reason always appears throughout history. This movement from one place to another is mostly evoked by the dream or desire of better lives. Homeland (in this context refers to under-developing country as Indonesia) frequently falls into crisis provoked by dreadful system in every aspect (social, politic, economy and culture). This situation becomes main factor of global migration chosen by Indonesian as a way to survive, to earn the money and also to bring their family into prosperity.  

 

Massive movement of Indonesian workers crossing all part of the world, from Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong to Middle East. Advanced countries are often imagined by those who lives in developing countries as promising lands where hope, chance and change are offered.  South Korea as Asia’s fourth largest economy power and also considered as one of the powerful nations in the world conceived by the Indonesian workers as main destination.

 

Human’s mobility unequivocally connected with the notion of geographic boundaries and territories. The wave of human’s migration from one place to another is also the process of exchange, a kind of massif “transaction”. Transaction in this context is no longer can be seen merely through the economical point of view. This process allows the exchange of narration, experience and history of group of people in a new place that has its own mechanism.

 

Videos created by Indonesian migrant workers that I mostly view on virtual canal became my first inspiration for the residency project in Seoul Art Space Geumcheon, South Korea in 2011. They reveal numerous sides of “unknown narration”. The videos make us think furthermore about how the advancement of virtual technology (video) has open new canals for alternative narrations. Based on my attention to these videos – after two months of research, interact with a lot of Indonesian migrant workers in Seoul City, I decided to make an online based media – with the video content made by Indonesian Migrant Workers in South Korea. By standing on the main function of virtual canal, as the space for alternative narrations to be produced, reproduced and distributed enormously across spatial and temporal boundaries, the use of virtual realm also came from the fact of the very close relation between migrant workers in South Korea and technology. In my opinion, it is so important to be able to see just what the living conditions for migrant workers are like and also to see it represented by them.
